TL;DR — Any gas fee payments above 0.001 ETH on Manta Pacific from 9:30AM UTC on January 18, 2024 (the time of TGE) to 4:30AM UTC on January 20, 2024 will be reimbursed to users.

On January 18, 2024, at 9:30AM UTC, Manta Pacific experienced an illicit DDoS attack that severely impeded access to its RPCs. Manta Network is working with authorities and various legal council to take action as a next step against this illegal attack.

Despite no issues with the chain itself (the network continued running, the blocks continued producing, etc.), users could not access many applications or complete transactions due to the RPC congestion created by the attack.

Meanwhile, as the RPCs recovered from the mitigation response, users found themselves in an unusual situation where gas prices were driven up due to massive user interaction from pending transactions during the illicit DDoS attack. As a result, users interacting with the chain saw gas fees significantly higher than normal.

Manta Network prides itself on being the first Ethereum L2 on Celestia. By leveraging Celestia DA, users are able to save significantly on gas costs. Over the course of 1 month, the network has saved users an estimated $1m in gas fees. Unfortunately, this incident drove a temporary increase in gas prices that were far from normal. In response, the gas fees from this incident will be reimbursed to the affected users.
