The Manta Network Trusted Setup Is Now Open for Contributions

You can contribute today; you can review the instructions in this article to walk through the entire process.

Be a part of what is slated to become the largest trusted setup in history!

On October 10, 2022, we launched the registration phase for our Trusted Setup. Today, we are excited to begin the contribution phase, which is the last part of the entire process. All registrants are able to contribute; don’t worry, if you haven’t registered yet, you can still register during the contribution phase. We currently have over 12,000 contributors registered. That means over 12,000 secret keys have been generated already and are ready to contribute.

We have contributors representing 177 different countries (or over 90% of all countries in the world).

When asked about the importance of the Trusted Setup and what it means to the registrants, these are some of the most common words and phrases that we saw in response. These words include freedom, personal, privacy, and security. We are excited to see such a strong alignment in core values with the Trusted Setup we are executing.

How to Contribute

There are three steps to contribute: install, register, and contribute. If you have already registered and have your 12-word secret key, you can skip right to the “contribute” section. You can also see all the instructions in our docs. This article walks you thought step-by-step, but if you prefer, you can view our video walkthrough, narrated by team cryptographer Todd Norton.

Install

The trusted setup takes place on the terminal. If you’ve never used a terminal before, don’t worry! It’s really just a few copies/pastes. And after you’ll feel like a true 21st-century hacker 😎.

First, open the terminal on your computer (it should look something like the image above for ).

Mac/Linux users: type in these commands:

curl - proto '=https' - tlsv1.2 -sSf https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Manta-Network/manta-rs/main/tools/install.sh | sh
source ~/.profile

Windows users, first download this, and then open terminal and nagivate where it was downloaded (likely “cd Downloads”). Once your in, type the following:

manta-trusted-setup-x86_64-pc-windows-msvc register

And that’s it! You are ready to move into registration.

Register

For all computers, just open terminal and run:

manta-trusted-setup register

You will be prompted for your email and Twitter handle. Once you provide this, you will receive your 12-word secret keyphrase. The screen will look like this:

After entering your information, save the secret phrase (the words in red) somewhere that you can locate later — you will use this to contribute to the Trusted Setup. Copy and paste the green link into your browser to register for our Trusted Setup. Each link is unique to one registration, so please do not share links.

Contribute

After your registration is complete, your application is pending. It takes approximately 24 hours to add you into the system to begin contribution. This means that you should wait at least 24 hours after your initial registration (if you registered prior to November 28, 2022, you are already in the system and able to contribute!) to begin contribution. Contributing is simple — all you need is your 12-word seed phrase!

Open terminal and enter:

manta-trusted-setup contribute

You’ll see a screen like this the image below.

From there, in the Your Secret prompt, type/paste in your 12-word secret and hit Enter. You will likely be placed in a contribution queue, where you must wait a bit.

NOTE: If your internet is slow, there is a chance you are unable to contribute before the 3-minute timeout. If so, you just need to wait as you will automatically be placed back in the queue.

Once your complete contribution, your screen will look something like this:

And congratulations! You will have contributed to what we hope to be the largest Trusted Setup in history! We have rewards and a custom NFT to show your participation that will be distributed to those of you who submitted your wallet address.

Tweet Your Contribution

Once your contribution is completed, you will see a blue text appear at the bottom. Copy that text over, and tweet it out through your Twitter to join the conversation and showcase your contribution to the Manta Network Trusted Setup!
